Molly Worthington Netball Facility officially opens at Kurri Kurri
The state-of-the-art Molly Worthington Netball Facility has officially opened, with the project delivering exciting upgrades to the sporting infrastructure at Booth Park, at Kurri Kurri.
The new facility, expected to be used by about 30,000 people each year, now supports increased local participation in netball, benefits school groups and community organisations, and provides capacity for Kurri Kurri Netball Association to host tournaments – including regional events.
The modern sporting complex features 12 new netball courts with Plexipave surfaces and floodlighting, a multi-purpose half court, two car parks and formalisation of car parking surrounding the netball facility, enhanced landscaping and park furniture to support players and the community, and an amenities building with essential facilities such as changerooms, canteen, office space, and bathrooms. It replaces the former Kurri Kurri netball courts, which had no capacity for further growth at the site.
Special Envoy for Men’s Health and Federal Member for Hunter said this is a huge win for Kurri Kurri and the wider Cessnock community.
“Local netball has outgrown the old courts, and this new facility gives players of all ages the space and quality infrastructure they deserve.
“It’s great to see an investment that will support grassroots sport, bring the community together and create opportunities for local competitions and events.”
Minister for Sport Steve Kamper said that sporting infrastructure should keep pace with progress in women’s sport.
“Through the Level the Playing Field Fund, the NSW Government is committed to removing barriers for women and girls in sport so that everyone can participate in an environment that makes them feel safe and supported.”
“This project ensures more equitable and inclusive access so all members of the community feel comfortable taking part.”
State Member for Cessnock Clayton Barr said “Projects like the Kurri Kurri netball courts are so important in encouraging people of all ages to get involved in sport, I look forward to see the new courts in action.”
Cessnock City Mayor Daniel Watton said the development reflected the growing community in the local government area.
“It’s incredibly exciting to see this important development brought to life, which will significantly improve local sporting facilities to better service our expanding community,” said Clr Watton.
“This facility is a very welcome addition and I look forward to seeing our community enjoy this incredible sporting hub for many years to come.”
The facility has been funded by the Australian Government’s Priority Community Infrastructure Program ($7.5m) and the NSW Government’s Level Playing Field Program 2023/24 ($1.9m), as well as Council and developer contributions.
